A shipping company has been fined NOK 1m ($93,755) after one of its vessels allegedly used heavy fuel oil in waters around the Arctic island of Svalbard.

The governor of Svalbard, which is administered by Norway, said in a statement that the master of the unnamed ship will also pay a penalty of NOK 30,000.

The offence against the Svalbard Environment Act was committed on 6 June, Lars Fause added.
