Volatile markets bring headaches not only for shipowners and operators holding transport-infrastructure assets. Traders, particularly commodities traders, are finding life hard too.

This week Cargill Inc, the global player and largest privately held US company, reported its worst quarterly results since 2001, down 88% on a year earlier. Between 2006 and 2011, it had five years of record profits.

Cargill is not the only one on the rack.
