Some pretty amazing but lesser-known facts emerged from a Baltic Exchange briefing on the expansion of the Panama Canal locks led by its chief architect Michael Newbery.
Before the work could even begin on digging out the new, huge locks at either end of the 80km (48-mile) canal, that have almost tripled its capacity for containerships, some 10,000 native crocodiles had to be removed.
