Big earnings advantages are still on offer for VLCCs fitted with scrubbers, despite a narrowing of the price gap between high-sulphur bunker fuel and very low-sulphur fuel oil.
UK shipbroker Gibson said the spread between the two fuels has proved to be volatile since the International Maritime Organization’s new sulphur rules came into effect in 2020, fluctuating between a high of $485 per tonne and a low of $60 tonne.
