Shipbrokers say the 96,700-dwt Continental (ex-Continental Spirit, built 1993) was sold for green recycling in India at a rate of $430 per ldt.

While two market databases identify Teekay as the operator a spokesman for the US-quoted company says  the ship was redelivered to its registered owner when a bareboat charter expired “a while ago”.

Today, Equasis lists the owner as Glion Continental Ltd of the UK and the manager as V Ships.

Observers following the deal, including scrapping specialist GMS, note that another aframax with ties to Teekay, the 96,900-dwt Pioneer (built 1993), fetched around $403 per ldt when it hit a scrap heap in the same region earlier this year.

Of the 122 crude carriers sold for demolition in 2012 approximately 22% have been aframaxes and long-range twos and another 23% fall in the medium-range and handy category, according to data compiled leading sale-and-purchase broker.

Nearly 500 bulkers and 148 containerships were torched thus far in 2012, the firm's market analysts added in a freshly minted research report. In the first 11 months of the year, it is estimated that 923 vessels were binned in total.
