Japan has distanced itself from a US-led navy coalition protecting shipping in the Strait of Hormuz by sending its own warship into the region.
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s government approved the dispatch of a destroyer and two patrol planes to the Gulf of Oman at a cabinet meeting this week.
The move is in response to a series of attacks on tankers in the region in the summer of last year.
