Sweden’s Erik Thun Group has continued to beef up its fleet with orders for eight vessels in the Netherlands.
It has contracted four dry cargo units and four coastal tankers at Scheepswerf Ferus Smit.
The four multipurposes have a capacity of 5,100 dwt and ice class 1B.
They are described as next-generation Troll-Max units, capable of operating in the Trollhatte canal and on Lake Vanern in Sweden.
And the Thun Tankers division has put pen to paper for four 7,999-dwt product tankers.
Ferus Smit is already building two such tankers for Erik Thun for handover in 2024, plus a 6,400-dwt general cargo ship due in 2023.
In addition, the owner has an 18,000-dwt dual-fuel Vinga class tanker on order at China Merchants Jinling Shipyard (Yangzhou) for delivery in 2024.
The Dutch yard has built more than 40 ships for Erik Thun.
All eight of the latest newbuildings are part of a fleet renewal programme and will be delivered from October 2024 onwards.
No prices have been revealed.
Future is bright
The owner believes it has a bright future ahead.
“In striving to be a partner over generations, it is essential that we continuously order modern, environmentally efficient vessels,” Erik Thun said.
Deputy managing director Henrik Kallsson said: “In Erik Thun, we have a long history of building, owning and operating both tankers and dry cargo ships in different sizes and with different trading areas, always with a high focus on resource efficiency translating into modern environmental care while focusing on our customers’ needs.”
Managing director Johan Kallsson added: “Our long experience in the business, paired with our vision to be a sustainable Swedish partner over generations, gives us a good basis for continual improvement and innovative design, providing our customers with sustainable and smart solutions.”
