Investment bank Clarksons Platou Securities has begun quoting separate daily rates for "eco" and "non-eco" tankers to illustrate the earnings gap.
The company defines eco tonnage as vessels built from 2015 onwards. A VLCC of this vintage gets through 44 tonnes of bunkers per day at 12.25 knots, while a 2010 to 2011-built tanker burns 59 tonnes.
Average VLCC earnings for non-eco 2010 units are now $2,900 per day, while modern ships are making $8,700 from the same Worldscale (WS) rates.
