French shipbuilding group DCNS is aiming to become a shareholder of STX France.
CEO Herve Guillou told Le Monde that it was likely the company would invest in the Saint-Nazaire plant.
The move will be made over the next three months, he added.
STX France is being taken over by Fincantieri of Italy.
The French government owns 33% of the yard and 62% of DCNS.
