The 102 metre trimaran, the Austal Hull 270, has been sold to an undisclosed European ferry operator, Austal said Monday.
Austal built the ferry on spec at its western Australian facility during the global financial crisis and had been unable to find a buyer.
The shipbuilder said the purchase was subject to a number of contractual conditions and the terms of the sale were still confidential.
