A tug suffered a dangerous engine room fire off Scotland after a pipe failed due to chafing, a UK accident report found.

The 400-gt SD Dexterous (built 1986), owned by Serco Marine Services, was escorting a warship at Gareloch on 12 May when the blaze broke out, damaging 20 square metres of the deckhead.

The Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) said the engine room was closed down as the master advised the pilot on the warship and shore authorities of the situation.
