The 16,700-dwt Kiani Satu (built 1997) ran into trouble on 8 August and ran aground near Buffels Bay in the Western Cape after losing engine power.
Initial reports suggested the vessel would be towed to Cape Town for repair after being refloated following multiple attempts over the weekend.
But the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) says the vessel is taking on water and attempts to remove bunkers have been abandoned because of severe weather conditions.
