The 16,700-dwt Kiani Satu (built 1997) went down onWednesday morning in 1,000 metres of water 110 miles from Buffels Bay where ithad grounded, South Africa’s Maritime Safety Authority (Samsa) confirmed.
Samsa said the vessel poses no more threat to theenvironment and no spill has been visible around the area where it sank.
A cleanup of the coastline where the ship grounded is stillongoing.
The Kiani Satu is part of the fleet of Esmeralda Schiffahrtsof Germany and has protection and indemnity cover from the Standard Club.
It was carrying a rice cargo when it grounded on 8 August inthe Goukamma nature reserve and marine protected area.
