A huge blaze caused by an explosion onboard a DFDS ferry off Denmark which saw nearly 250 people evacuated is now largely under control.
The 494-lane-metre Lisco Gloria (built 2002) continues to smoulder after an apparent accident triggered the massive fire in the Baltic Sea on Saturday.
A total of 249 people had to be rescued from the Lithuania-flagged ro-pax with 28 said to be injured, three seriously.
A crew member of the ship, which was travelling from Kiel in Germany to the Lithuanian port of Klaipeda, is said to have discovered smoke coming from an onboard lorry.
Soon there was an explosion on the upper deck as the ship, owned by DFDS A/S but operated by DFDS Lisco, which was engulfed in huge plumes of smoke.
The vessel began drifting towards the Danish island of Langeland and a specialist team was dropped onboard by helicopter to drop anchor which halted the drift.
Firefighters were sent to tackle the blaze while there was concern for the 200 tons of heavy fuel oil onboard. However, it is understood that there has been no pollution.
The Szczecin-built Lisco Gloria is classed by ABS and has P&I cover with the West of England.
