Countries must take tougher action in the face of increased tampering with satellite navigation systems that threaten more groundings and collisions, according to three specialist United Nations agencies.

Jamming or spoofing critical signals is rising, with a knock-on impact for maritime safety and rescue operations, a joint statement by the UN’s maritime, aviation and telecoms agencies said.

One of the signatories, International Maritime Organization secretary general Arsenio Dominguez, said: “The safety of seafarers and shipping relies on the resilience of systems to support safe navigation and communication.
