The Norwegian security consultancy says pirates’ preferred hunting grounds have moved westward from Nigeria and Benin to Togo.

In a recent client briefing the firm said chemical and product tankers are the most vulnerable vessels in the Bights of Benin and Bonny but noted that Nigeria should still be considered a “significant risk area” despite the decline in attacks.

“Nymex, Trafigura and Vitol and others who earlier fled Lagos (Nigeria) and Cotonou (Benin) for Lome (Togo) because they believed they were better protected there will have to rethink their strategies,” it added.
