Royal Caribbean Cruises has ordered two LNG-powered cruiseship newbuildings at Finnish shipbuilder Meyer Turku.
The 200,000-gt vessels, which will be developed under the project name “Icon” are due to be delivered in 2022 and 2024.
“With Icon class, we begin the journey to take the smoke out of our smokestacks,” said Royal Caribbean Cruises chief executive Richard Fain.
Royal Caribbean said the newbuildings would also introduce the use of fuel cell technology in a bid to further reduce harmful emissions.
