LNG producer Qatargas has made its first approach to shipowners as it progresses efforts to acquire up to 80 LNG carrier newbuildings worth more than $15bn as part of expansion plans, new US liquefaction interests and fleet renewal.
Industry sources said owners have received a request that is being termed a "solicitation of interest" (SOI) on the ships, which was sent out at the end of July.
