Japanese shipowner NYK is working with compatriot yards Namura Shipbuilding and Sasebo Heavy Industries on a project to replace the steam turbine propulsion system on a Moss-type LNG carrier with an X-DF low-speed dual-fuel diesel-electric engine.
The three companies now plan to move to a detailed design of the steam turbine conversion, NYK said.
