A failure to properly maintain ships during lockdown periods of the coronavirus pandemic is probably behind a spike in breakdowns and engine room fires to levels not seen in decades, according to the head of Australia’s maritime authority.
Mick Kinley told TradeWinds that Australian port state control had identified an increase in deficiencies and detentions amid signs that a period of limited maintenance from 2020 is coming back to bite the industry.
