The cruise industry has outperformed the retail sector as consumers want to have experiences more so than things, a UBS analyst says.

"Similar indications come from the lodging sector, as hotel operators have all flagged the strength in leisure travel," Robin Farley wrote in a note to clients.

"Cruise lines may be the equivalent of investing purely in the leisure segment of hotels, with the added bonus of tax structure, high barriers to entry, and the ability to move assets to markets with the highest demand," she added

Revenue in the North American cruise market gained 6.3%
