The Midnatsol has an AKPAS electric propulsion system.

Finnish marine propulsion company Wartsila is going electric with the purchase of the Norwegian company Aker Kvaerner Power and Automation Systems (AKPAS) for NOK 110m ($16.5m).

AKPAS specialises in marine electrical systems for the shipping and offshore energy markets with products including propulsion and ship automation systems.

The electric propulsion systems have been fitted to a number of offshore support vessels and ferries including the 15,000-gt Hurtigruten coastal cruise vessels Trollfjord and Midnatsol (built 2002/3).
