Owners of the New Carissa, the 44,527-dwt woodchip carrier (built 1989) which was wrecked off Oregon in the US in 1999, have agreed to a $6.5m settlement with a group of federal and state agencies.
The latest development in a series of claims and counter-claims will see the money being spent on an environment restoration programme. Pollution from the ship’s bunkers after it split in two killed more than 2,000 seabirds, particularly the endangered marbled murrelet.
The
