Claims by environmentalists that a decision has been taken to class ships as “toxic waste” when they are sold for scrap have been flatly denied by the Basel Convention secretariat.
Following a meeting in Geneva last week, Greenpeace and the Basel Action Network claimed signatories to the convention on the international movement of hazardous waste had agreed ships were covered by the rules.
