A US aircraft carrier has been involved in a collision with a Turkish-linked bulker in the Mediterranean.
The US Navy’s Sixth Fleet said the casualty involved the USS Harry S Truman and the 53,000-dwt Besiktas-M (built 2003).
The incident happened on late Wednesday in the vicinity of Port Said, Egypt — the northern entrance to the Suez Canal.
“The collision did not endanger the Harry S Truman as there are no reports of flooding or injuries,” the Sixth Fleet said.
“The propulsion plants are unaffected and in a safe and stable condition.”
The navy is investigating.
The Besiktas-M is listed as owned and commercially managed by Black Hawk Shipping, a Marshall Islands entity with only one ship to its name, according to the Equasis database.
The Clarksons and VesselsValue databases list the ship as controlled by Turkey’s Iskenderun Ship Management, which could not be immediately reached for comment.
The technical manager is Synergy Ship Management, which also could not be immediately reached.
Satellite tracking data shows the supramax is laden and at anchor. It had picked up its cargo at Aqaba, Jordan and transited the Suez Canal with Constanta, Romania, as its intended destination.
The vessel flies the Panamanian flag and is classed by Japan’s ClassNK. It has insurance from NorthStandard, according to Equasis.(Copyright)
