A Russian seafarer has died from a suspected heart attack on a supramax bulker anchored off India.
The body of 50-year-old Sergey Milyakov was found in his cabin in the early hours of Tuesday off the port of Paradip in the eastern state of Odisha, the Hindustan Times reported.
The post-mortem examination was delayed as officials waited for the 55,300-dwt Al Danah (built 2011) to berth.
Odisha police chief Sunil Bansal said a probe would be ordered into Milyakov’s death if necessary.
Paradip Port Trust chairman PL Haranadh said crew members had discovered the body.
Captain Dmitry Podokozin then informed the port authority.
“We are told that Milyakov is suspected to have died of cardiac arrest,” Haranadh added.
The vessel, which had 23 crew members on board, left Chittagong in Bangladesh last month and was transporting cargo to Maharashtra state in west India.
Regarding the delayed post-mortem, police superintendent Akhileshwar Singh said: “The ship was some 8 km to 9 km from the port and was waiting to be berthed. We sent our officials on a small boat.
“Our people could not enter the ship to take the body out. We decided to wait till the ship berths.”
Bulker push
India’s Ministry of External Affairs will inform the family of the deceased.
The vessel is owned by Safeen Feeders, part of Abu Dhabi’s huge AD Ports Group.
The Al Danah was bought as Eratios by the container line last April for $17.6m as part of its push into dry cargo shipping.
The seller was Athemar Maritime of Greece.
