A German container vessel managed to give pirates the slip after coming under attack in the Arabian Sea on Monday.
The 1,444-teu Courier (built 1995) was assaulted at around 13:00 local time but managed to evade capture, an informed source told TradeWinds.
The incident involving the Antigua & Barbuda-flagged ship is thought to have occurred around 400 miles south-east of the Omani port of Salalah.
