The New York-listed operator says the 2,442-teu Messini (ex-Pembroke, built 1997) was financed with equity and has been chartered to Evergreen for approximately 18 months at a rate of $8,100 per day.

“The purchase price for the Messini, which is close to her estimated scrap value, together with the time charter arranged, allow us to generate healthy returns and eliminate residual value risk,” finance chief Gregory Zikos told investors in a statement Monday.

In addition, the Athens-based owner of 58 containerships says the same Taiwanese carrier has locked in the 3,351-teu Konstantina(built 1992) for a year at a rate of around $7,550 in a fixture scheduled to commence in October of this year.

“We have reduced our re-chartering risk for the coming years,” Zikos continued. “The charters for the vessels coming out of employment during the remainder of 2012 and 2013 account for 1.6% and 4.2% of our 2012 and 2013 contracted revenues respectively.”

TradeWinds first shed light on Costamare’s acquisition of the Pembroke on 18 July. At the time, the vessel was controlled by German interests. Today, Clarksons says the ship is operated by Ciel Shipmanagement, the Constantinos Constantakopoulos-led company’s management wing.
