The US Coast Guard (USCG) said the barge was one of three unladen units being transported near the Bonneville Lock and Dam about 40 miles east of Portland in the early hours of Thursday.
The crew of the Tidewater tug Hurricane reported that the first of the barges made brief contact with the bed of the river.
