Kerch-based Zaliv Shipyard in Russian-annexed Crimea aims to establish itself as a shiprepair hub for vessels trading in the Black Sea and Azov Sea.
Director of shiprepair Gennady Slugin says the yard is also targeting tonnage involved in the construction of the Kerch Strait Bridge, as well as scheduled repair work on naval vessels. Zaliv is working on steel structures for the road and rail bridge.
Rather than using residual shipbuilding capacity, Slugin says potential demand justifies its plans to build a separate workshop and recruit specialist personnel to provide a full range of repairs.
Slugin adds that there are 13 other Crimean enterprises providing repairs but that almost all of them have fixed assets that are outdated, primarily dry and floating docks.
He says Zaliv’s recently upgraded dock and cranes give it the competitive edge needed to win contracts.
