The intense fight for North Sea vessel utilisation has pressured some Norwegian offshore owners to resort to a cut-throat practice that is driving down day rates further, as well as releasing extra exhaust emissions into the environment.
Two things must be noted to understand the issue. One is that vessel fuel bills are always paid by charterers in the offshore sector and the other is that the North Sea is plagued with idle ships.
