Senior analyst James Frew says the fundamental changes to liner alliances leave operators with a stark choice: double down on expansion or rationalise investments and service network.

He says the 2M Alliance has made its big investments but that the rest of the industry needs to formulate a business plan to remain competitive in this revised landscape.

For the moment, the liner industry remains stuck in a hole that it has dug for itself, with relatively few levers it can pull to alleviate the situation.
