Concerns are being voiced over the condition of 20 LNG carriers after containment-system problems similar to those found on the ill-fated French newbuilding Gaz de France Energy were discovered on a Korean-built, BG Group-owned vessel.
Informed industry sources say pressure tests indicate the secondary membrane barrier in the GazTransport&Technigaz (GTT)-designed, Mark III membrane-type containment system installed on BG's 138,209-cbm Methane Kari Elin (built 2004) is leaking, although the primary barrier, which is the layer in contact with the LNG cargo, is understood to be OK.
