The US-flag fleet has dwindled well below the number of ships that the US Maritime Administration (MarAd) believes it needs to man the government’s reserve fleet of vessels, according to a top official.
Maritime Administrator Paul “Chip” Jaenichen says at least 100 ships are needed in the fleet of US-flag tonnage trading in international markets, yet there are now only 79 available and more exits are expected soon.
