TradeWinds understands the sentence of Captain Apostolos Mangouras is “suspended”, with two years being the maximum that can be granted and suspended under local law.
The Supreme Court ruled that Mangouras was guilty of “gross negligence” in the incident, leading to catastrophic environmental damage.
Tanker owners’ association Intertanko says that although Mangouras will not have to serve time, it “makes no difference to the fact that a Spanish court has criminalised an innocent man”.
