Insurance is set to remain a buyers’ market for shipowners for many years to come, according to leading Lloyd’s of London underwriter Richard Tomlin.

Tomlin (53) does not expect to see the hull-insurance market harden in the seven years before his retirement.

The chairman of the marine committee of the Lloyd’s Market Association (LMA) sees dangers in the long-running depressed state of the hull market — not least in the emergence of a generation of underwriters and brokers who have never known a hard market.
