There are few shipping families which have been around as long as the Kulukundis clan, so long in fact that several different spellings of the family name have evolved. Most people are familiar with the Kulukundis version, but in its translation from Greek to English script, it has also been spelled Couloucoundis, Culucundis and Kouloukountis. Whichever way is preferred, the name ranks as one of the most famous among Greek shipowners.
he current custodians of the family's long shipping tradition - the
likes of Sir Eddie and Stathes Kulukundis at Rethymnis & Kulukundis,
and Miles Kulukundis at London & Overseas Freighters - are the fifth
generation of a family which can trace its shipping roots back some 160
years.
Today, about 100 members of the family are alive who stem from a man
from Kassos who started the family down the road to shipping fame and
fortune.
