A number of semi-refrigerated small LPG/ethylene carriers controlled by Germany’s Gaschem have been earmarked for pioneering conversions that will allow them to carry ethane for a new trade between the US and South America.
Industry sources reveal that the 8,500-cbm ships will have regasification kit added that will enable them to deliver regasified ethane to Brazilian petrochemicals company Braskem.
They say the move is seen as a fast-track solution for getting tonnage ready that can ship in product without the need for Braskem to build onshore regas facilities.
