John Coustas, the head of New York-listed Danaos Corp, has launched a swingeing attack on the credibility of the newly marketed eco-designs for ships, insisting they will never repay a shipowner’s investment.
He says owners have been swamped by yard promotions and he thinks it would be foolish to build a ship optimised at a low speed.
Shipyard claims that the new designs can give better consumption at full load and even keel, in calm weather and at a lower speed are “all on paper”, he adds.
