Emissions from cruiseships are seen as a major problem throughout the European Union. Regulatory changes are pushing cruise lines to clean up their act, but environmental activists see slow progress at best, with companies doing little to address the problem.
Cruiseship pollution is difficult to separate from overall shipping-related pollution, which is believed to contribute to many respiratory illnesses. But cruiseships pose a particular problem due to the high frequency of port calls and the population density of those ports, says Faig Abbasov, a researcher for shipping emissions at Transport & Environment.
