Chinese shipping colossus Cosco has breathed fresh life into the flagging orderbooks of domestic shipbuilders with $1.95bn-worth of boxship newbuilding contracts.

Market sources say up to 13 units of 20,000 teu will be split between three of China’s large shipyards.

They add that Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding (SWS) has secured four of the ultra-large containership (ULC) newbuildings from Cosco along with options for two additional ships.
