The career of the world's oldest active passengership has been unexpectedly cut short thanks to corrosion problems unearthed in a Singapore dry dock.

When the 6,800-gt Doulos (built 1914) entered for routine maintenance last month, its owner, Christian missionary organisation Operation Mobilisation (OM), was hoping that regulatory authorities would grant the vessel an exemption to the Safety of Life at Sea (Solas) 2010 regulations, which would have allowed it to trade at least until 2014, its centennial year.
