China’s presence on the world shipbuilding stage is a short one compared with Europe, Japan and South Korea. It has made a startlingly rapid rise to become the star actor, even if that top position is now being wound back.
Its emergence started in 1990 when the world’s most populous country selected commercial shipbuilding as a strategic industry, emulating similar moves by Japan and Korea in the 1960s and 1970s.
