An Australian study has revealed that one-third of ballast water treatment systems being used on visiting ships fail to perform properly.
Australia has some of the strictest regulations to prevent invasive species from entering the country, including its coastal waters.
It tested several treatment systems onboard 39 visiting vessels from 2021 to 2023. Sampling teams took 44 ballast water samples.
