Methanol is the lower carbon fuel that ships’ engine manufacturer Wartsila sees emerging fastest, although fully green zero emission versions are still some way off.

Ship operators need to start making short-term decisions now that can have longer-term benefits in making the transition to decarbonised fleets, the Finnish group said in a webinar.

“We have the technology existing for green methanol,” said Roger Holm, president marine power and executive vice president at the company.
