Iridium Communications has officially launched its global maritime distress and safety system (GMDSS), providing competition in a space once monopolised by Inmarsat.
The US satellite communication company announced on Tuesday that the maritime safety system went live on 11 December after more than four years of formal evaluation from United Nations regulators.
"We've designed our system to be the most competitive out there and believe it's going to be very, very attractive to many vessels," Iridium chief executive Matthew Desch said in a virtual press conference.
