As the US seeks to build out its shipping capacity, it could look to nuclear.
The Ships for America Act, aimed at boosting US-flag shipping and domestic shipbuilding, has provisions for nuclear-powered ships, while reactor-makers are trying to move into the maritime space, and classification societies and the International Maritime Organization examine their policies and regulations.
“I believe this is the future,” said Carleen Lyden Walker, managing partner at the Maritime Accelerator for Resilience, during a panel at the Connecticut Maritime Association conference on Thursday.
