New York-listed Euronav picked up the first four Metrostar newbuildings at $96m each yesterday and has options in place for the remainder of the series at $98m each.

Should Euronav take the full fleet, 2015 spending on VLCCs would reach $3.07bn across 39 vessels, the valuation service says.

This compares to $4.36bn on 89 VLCCs in 2014, VesselsValue calculates.

Last year Euronav spent well over $1bn on 19 of the tankers across two deals with Maersk.
