The UK is to develop a European task force to protect shipping in the Middle East Gulf.
Foreign secretary Jeremy Hunt said in parliament on Monday that he had secured support from France and Germany for the maritime mission.
He told MPs that Iran would have to accept a "larger Western military presence" along its coastline.
