Today the trader was tipped as the charterer of the 50,000-dwt Emerald Express (built 2011), a medium-range (MR) product tanker controlled by Mitsui OSK Lines of Japan.
According to a report published by RS Platou Houston, Trafigura paid more than $1.2m to hire this vessel for a single voyage from the US Gulf to Chile.
At a glance the deal doesn’t seem particularly exotic but a leading US tanker broker feels it serves as further evidence that the company is still an active player in the spot market.
